Get to know the One Thousand Schools Board of Directors

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

Bob Azzarito, D. Min. (Sacramento, CA)

Bob Azzarito has been involved with One Thousand Schools from its inception. While leading a campus program at the University of Mary Washington he organized a service trip to Honduras. On that trip was a young sophomore named Shin Fujiyama. He has worked with college age students for over 30 years and published his first book entitled, Your Fifth Year, a practical guide for first year college graduates. He holds degrees in Political Science, Church History Theology, and received a Doctorate from Regent/Carey College in Vancouver, BC, in the Spiritual Formation of Young Adults.

Amanda Fennell Andrews (Baltimore)

Amanda served as the Chief Operating Officer at One Thousand Schools from 2013-2017. She is the Co-Founder and former Co-President of the Towson University chapter of OTS, and former Student Director. Amanda earned a Bachelor of Science in Nonprofit Management from Towson University and certification as a Nonprofit Professional from the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance. She is a W.K Kellog Foundation Next Gen Scholar and small business owner.

Shin Fujiyama (Honduras)

Shin’s family immigrated from Japan to the US in the 80s. They lived in Oakland and then in Fairfax County, Virginia. He spent his childhood learning English, playing soccer, and creating small aquariums of freshwater fish. His mother created a bilingual library in the family basement where she taught the four siblings the importance of reading books. His current aspirations outside of work include: becoming a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, practicing 1,000 hours of salsa dancing, running the San Pedro Sula half marathon in June with German and Pedro, and writing a memoir. His two favorite podcasters are Rich Roll and Jocko Willink. He has been experimenting with a whole-foods-plant-based diet for over a year. He graduated from the University of Mary Washington and has been working in Honduras since 2004 as the co-founder of One Thousand Schools.

Shawn Humphrey (Virginia)

Shawn (aka the Blue Collar Professor) is the founder of IMAGINE Social Good, the Two Dollar Challenge, and author of the Sidekick Manifesto. His blog explores issues facing social innovators and entrepreneurs. He challenges the conventional wisdom of social entrepreneurialism with his Do’s and Don’ts for Do-Gooders and motivates do-gooders with his Half-time Speeches. At the core of Shawn’s philosophy is his Rewilding Pedagogy – a unique pedagogy that’s hell bent on transforming his students into change-making animals.

GENERAL BOARD MEMBERS

Gurminder “Monty” Ahuja, MD FAAOS (Maryland)

As a proud alumnus of the University of Maryland, College Park, Gurminder “Monty” Ahuja is proud to be celebrating the success of the humbling, global organization, One Thousand Schools. He is a practicing orthopaedic surgeon in Baltimore, Maryland. Since 2008, he has been using his expertise to provide free hip and knee replacements in developing countries with Operation Walk Maryland. His journey with One ThousandSchools began in 2012, when his eldest daughter traveled on her first trip to Villa Soleada. He has been able to make several trips with OTS with his two daughters, who are still active volunteers. He hopes to travel to Honduras with his son when he enters high school. As an avid proponent of education as a tool to uplift individuals, he fully believes the mission of One Thousand Schools and is honored to be asked to serve on the board. He is blessed with his lovely wife Jaspreet, and three wonderful children, Raveena, Gurleen, and Aneel.

Alexandra Altman (San Francisco, CA)

Alexandra is currently an analyst with the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco covering macroeconomic, regulatory, and banking developments in Asia. Prior to the Fed, she worked as an international economist at the U.S. Treasury and associate with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. She has a master’s degree in international relations and economics from Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and business administration from UC Berkeley. Alexandra has been going to Honduras with OTS since 2011 as a volunteer, and has returned many times since as a trip leader and children’s home volunteer. She also pioneered the Brick by Brick fundraisers in New York in 2015.

Davis Campbell (Sacramento)

Davis Campbell is a Senior Fellow at the University of California, Davis, Center for Applied Policy in Education. Campbell has a deep and broad background in public education. He served for 12 years in the California Department of Education serving for six years as Deputy State Superintendent of Public Instruction in charge of all education programs. In 1988 he was appointed Executive Director of the California School Boards Association, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 2001. Campbell maintains an active consulting practice in effective governance in public and non-profit agencies at both the state and international level.

Colette Eustace (New York)

Colette Eustace currently works at UNICEF USA, joining the team after completing her MPA in Development Practice from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. Colette’s international experience includes projects in education and M&E with both Save the Children Mexico and the Practical Education Network in Ghana. She served as an M&E Fellow with MIT’s Development Lab in 2017, spending her summer in rural Guatemala to analyze the outcomes of a co-creation initiative aimed at designing low-cost technologies to solve local problems. Prior to completing her Master’s degree, Colette worked in Honduras, serving as One Thousand Schools’ first National Volunteer Coordinator. She earned her B.A. in both Economics and Sociology from Stony Brook University, where she led a chapter of One Thousand Schools and served on the university’s Women’s Leadership Council. Colette has also previously held internship positions with the U.S. Peace Corps, Room to Read and the Institute of International Education, and is extremely passionate about working toward a more equitable world for all.

Christine Exelry (Boston)

After earning her Ph.D. in economics at Stanford University, Christine Exley joined Harvard Business School as an assistant professor. Her research focuses on how individuals develop excuses to justify their own behavior, such as excuses not to give. During her undergraduate studies at the University of Mary Washington, from which she earned her B.S. in mathematics & economics, Christine became involved in One Thousand Schools– participating in service trips and initiatives related to improved cookstoves and microfinance. In addition to her love for economics and for OTS, she is an avid dog-lover who co-founded Wagaroo.com to help rehome dogs in need of new homes.

Ken Hall (Carmichael, CA)

Ken and his wife Lynn live in Carmichael, California and are blessed with two married daughters and four grandchildren. Ken founded a company serving the business side of California school districts and served as its President for 30 years. He sold the company to his employees and retired in 2005. After an additional eight years adjunct teaching at the University of Southern California Ken, again retired and today serves on five non profit Boards of Directors in addition to being a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Redlands. Ken and Lynn have been to Honduras to build schools three times and are excited to see the Ken and Lynn Hall High School being built at Villa Soleada.

Michael L Konig, JD (New Jersey)

Mike has been parent-chaperone on behalf of Freehold Township High School on three OTS trips. Mike has three children, including Jesse Konig the founder of the SHH Freehold Township High School chapter, and Jake Konig (Jesse’s younger brother) who took over leadership of that chapter after Jesse graduated, and took it to unprecedented levels of participation and fund-raising. Since 2004, Mike has served as General Counsel of Bluerock Real Estate, a Manhattan-based private equity real estate firm. He also serves as Chief Legal Officer of Bluerock Residential Growth REIT, Inc. (NYSE American Ticker: BRG). Mike received a J.D. degree cum laude in 1987 from California Western School of Law, located in San Diego, California, and an M.B.A. degree in Finance in 1988 from San Diego State University. Mike grew up near the Rocky Mountains in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and received his Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) degree from the University of Calgary in 1982. He has over three decades of experience in law, finance and business, including executive/legal positions at other public and privately-held companies. Mike lives in Manasquan, New Jersey and in Midtown Manhattan, and is an enthusiastic saltwater fisherman as well as a freshwater fly-fisherman.

Sadie Lockhart (Florida)

Sadie Lockhart is an actor, director and teaching artist. She is a founding member of The Oven Theatre, a theater for social change company located in Baltimore, MD. Currently she is the Emerging Arts Leader Fellow at American Stage in St.Petersburg, FL. Sadie graduated from Towson University in 2015, where she was involved in One Thousand Schools for four years and served as Co-President for 3 of those years. She taught theater and music in Honduras through the Summer Camp program. She is an advocate for the Alumni Chapter and is passionate about connecting members who have graduated with opportunities to volunteer and fundraise with OTS. Sadie is beyond honored and thrilled to be on the Board of Directors and can’t wait to get started and work with all the incredible Board members.

Brian Malloy (New Jersey)

Kendra Prosser, RN (Denver, CO)

Kendra is a pediatric nurse at the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Kendra first got involved in SHH as a sophomore at Clemson University. During her time at Clemson she served as Design Chair, Fundraising Chair and Chapter President. She participated in 6 trips to Honduras and served as a Trip Leader for three of those trips.

Maria Reyes (New York)

As Country Director for, Maria ran on-the-ground operations for One Thousand Schools. She earned her Master’s degree in Mediation and Conflicts Resolution from the University of Puerto Rico and Universidad Europea del Atlántico. She also has a Master’s degree in Strategic Management from Universidad del Puerto Rico UNINI. She now lives in New York and works as the Program Director at the Human Rights Institution at El Puente Leaders for Peace and Justice.

Scarlet Soult (Virginia)

Scarlet currently lives outside the D.C. metropolitan area working as a data scientist for the U.S. government. As a Virginia Tech alumna, she strives to live out her school’s motto, Ut Prosim, that I may serve. She has been a One Thousand Schools sidekick since 2011 and cherishes the opportunity to be involved no matter where she is in the world. During her free time she coaches youth soccer, a much more laid back position compared to her days playing goalie during cage soccer in Honduras!

Kirk Walters, PhD (Maryland)

Dr. Kirk Walters is a managing researcher at American Institutes for Research. His work broadly focuses on understanding ways to improve math teaching and learning in underserved communities and strengthening the connection between research and practice. Kirk first became involved with One Thousand Schools as a research thought partner, and more recently through his daughter Maia’s active participation in OTS as a student at UMD.

Johnny Zeng (France)

Johnny Zeng is a graduate student currently completing a double degree program in MBA/MS in International and European Business at Pepperdine University in California and EM Strasbourg Business School in France. Originally from Orange County, California, Johnny moved to Connecticut after high school to join the cadet corps at the United States Coast Guard Academy. Upon graduating with a commission as an officer in the Coast Guard, Johnny conducted search & rescue operations and enforced fisheries law on the high seas of the Pacific Ocean. His most recent duty station was in Seattle, WA where he managed the federal waterways in an area of responsibility that stretched from the Washington Coast to the rivers of Montana. In his free time, Johnny enjoys exploring and venturing into the great outdoors. He also likes volunteering on projects that give back to the community and spending time with friends and family. Long time volunteer and supporter of One Thousand Schools, Johnny raised money for OTS through his Climb for Honduras campaign in 2016, in which he climbed 58 mountains in Colorado.

PARTNERS & STAFF

Imad Arain (Berlin, Germany)

Imad was introduced to One Thousand Schools during his junior year in college and attended his first trip as a volunteer during Winter 2008. He has been volunteering and working with OTS ever since. He has an extensive background in IT and Data Management; working with several US government agencies, private companies, and non-profit organizations. He is currently pursuing his Master’s in Operations Research at Technische Universität Berlin. Imad plays a key role, behind the scenes, in keeping OTS’ website and IT infrastructure operational. During his free time, he loves to read and learn new technical skills.

Katie Mulder (Washington, D.C.)

Katie joined One Thousand Schools during her sophomore year of high school and attended her first trip in Spring 2015. She went on to become the Chapter President Mountain View High School before attending college at The University of Virginia where she served as Chapter President and Student Director. After graduating, she began working for One Thousand Schools. She has a background in international development, data analysis, impact reporting, and sustainability. Katie builds all of our financial and impact reports, along with leading the charge in organizational development. In her free time, she loves to read, travel, and exercise.

Maxie Gluckman (San Diego, CA)

Maxie is a current PhD student in Education at the University of California, San Diego who is committed to creating diverse opportunities for teaching and learning that improve the equity in access and quality of educational opportunities for underrepresented communities both locally and abroad. Previously, she held positions as an education policy researcher, bilingual educator, curriculum designer, faculty developer, and founded an education consulting company that focuses on improving quality educational opportunities for Hispanics. She currently leads “Train for Change,” a non-profit teacher development organization that aims to improve educational quality in 1000 schools in impoverished areas in Honduras. She has earned her undergraduate degree from UCLA, a Master’s in Education, and holds a bilingual Spanish-English teaching credential. Maxie’s research interests focus on system design for establishing sustainable and scalable programs in educator development.

Marlene Kindred (Fredericksburg, VA)

Marlene has been part of One Thousand Schools since its inception in 2006. She became the Administrative Director when OTS began on the University of Mary Washington’s campus. She has extensive experience in office management,
accounting and property management. Marlene acts as liaison between OTS and US governmental and Virginia state agencies providing any financial and administrative information and reporting required. She is a native of Virginia and in her spare time enjoys floristry, flower gardening and antiquing.
