Meet Merlin Velasquez, Director of Finances
“I was born here in El Progreso, on October 2nd 1996. Our relationship with the organization began around 2008, my mom worked in a Children’s Home called Coprome, where Shin was helping out. Once my mom was fired, Shin offered her a job in the organization when they were first starting up.
I remember that they were building the houses in Villa Soleada and my mom used to bring us there during vacations and whenever we could go, and we were always with the volunteers and taking part in all the activities they were doing. My siblings and I grew up alongside the organization. Later I saw the organization was doing a lot of really good stuff like building houses for people with a lack of resources, building schools, which is something very important for our country because we don’t have a lot of infrastructure, also building the Children’s Home, the Villa Soleada Bilingual School, etc. They are projects that have had a huge impact on us. For that reason I had the idea to work for the organization once I got a degree from university.
Now I work in the main office. Here we work together as a team and we all support each project. We work hard because SHH is a non profit organization that aims to help people in need and beside that SHH is our family. All together we help to accomplish the objectives of the organization.
Also, while working I am studying public accounting and finance, but I want to get a masters degree in finance once I finish my bachelors degree. And my plans for the future, if God permits, are to continue to work for the organization.
Like I said before, I wanted to work here once I got my bachelors degree, but they gave me the opportunity to work here two years ago, when I was in my second year of my degree. For that I am very grateful because not every organization is willing to hire someone without a lot of experience or this young for a position that requires a lot of responsibility because it is finance, which is a very sensitive area. Every business tries to take care of their finances and to manage them in the best way. When I started, I was just 20 years old and I never thought I would be hired by that age. Because of that, I thank all of the directors, I thank Shin, I thank Yapa, who helped me a lot during that time, and I thank everyone for their support and their trust and the help that they gave me.”

“Yo nací aquí en la ciudad de El Progreso, el 2 de oct de 1996. Nuestra relación con la organización comenzó en el 2008 o así, que mi mamá trabajaba en un hogar llamado Coprome, donde Shin ayudaba con donaciones. Una vez que mi mama fue despedida, Shin le dio trabajo en la organización cuando estaban empezando.
Recuerdo que estaba construyendo las casas de Villa Soleada y mi mamá nos traía durante vacaciones y cuando podíamos, y estábamos siempre con los voluntarios y con todas las actividades que hacían allí. Mis hermanos y yo crecimos a la vez que creció la organización. Luego vi que la organización estaba haciendo algo muy bueno, construir casas para personas de escasos recursos, construir escuelas, que es algo muy importante para nuestro país porque casi no tenemos infraestructuras, también el hogar de niños, la escuela bilingüe… Y son proyectos que te impactan demasiado. Por ello tuve la idea de trabajar en la organización cuando tuviera mi título universitario.
Ahora trabajo en las oficinas principales. Aquí somos un equipo de trabajo y entre todos apoyamos cada proyecto. Porque SHH es una organización sin fines de lucro que se dedica a ayudar a los más necesitados y además de eso es nuestra familia. Entre todos nos ayudamos para poder cumplir los objetivos de la organización.
También mientras trabajo estoy estudiando contabilidad pública y finanzas, pero me quiero especializar en una maestría en finanzas cuando termine la carrera. Y mis planes de futuro, si Dios lo permite, son seguir aquí trabajando en la organización.
En su momento tuve la idea de trabajar aquí cuando tuviera mi título universitario, pero me dieron la oportunidad de trabajar hace dos años, cuando estaba en mi segundo año de universidad. Y por ello estoy muy agradecido, porque no cualquier empresa o organización hoy en día va a contratar a alguien sin experiencia o alguien muy joven para un puesto que requiere bastante responsabilidad, porque es un área delicada ya que son las finanzas, los recursos, y es muy importante. Toda empresa trata de cuidarlos y administrarlos de la mejor manera. Yo cuando empecé sólo tenía 20 años y no pensé jamás ser contratado a esa edad. Por eso le doy las gracias a todos los directores, a Shin, a Yapa, que estuvo en ese momento y me apoyó bastante, y agradecerles a todos por el apoyo, la confianza y la ayuda que me han brindado.”
