Meet Senia Chinchilla, Teacher at the Villa Soleada Bilingual School
“My first teachers were my parents. When I was 5 years old, they showed me how to add, subtract, read and write. My parents are the best thing about my life. They mean everything to me. Since I was little they taught me everything about values like respect and love. I started school and it was funny because I already knew everything. Instead of giving me extra activities, the teachers would send me home early. The director would write a note saying that I was allowed to leave early because I finished all of my school work very quickly. Then in 4th grade, I got a scholarship and from there I continued to work hard. I loved my classes. My favorite teachers were my Spanish teacher and my math teacher. Later I went to university.
I wasn’t going to be a teacher, I wanted to do computer science, so that was what I started off with. One day they sent me to a social work activity where I had to teach two people about computers. I didn’t want to, but I had to do it because it was a part of my required classes. I taught the classes and one of my students was telling other people that I was the worst teacher that existed and that she didn’t learn anything with me. So I began to think, “how is she going to learn with me if I know nothing about teaching?”. So I think I became a teacher because of that person. This was a reason for me think: “Okay, this girl thinks I can’t do this but actually I can”. So I stopped studying computer science and I started studying education. I graduated, and I am now licenced in pedagogy, I am a teacher and I work here at the Villa Soleada Bilingual School. A friend of mine told me about the organization and I became curious about it because one of my dreams since I was little was to work in a nonprofit. I left my resume here at the school and two months later they hired me.
What I like the best about teaching is the affection from the children. It’s the most beautiful thing and it motivates me to come to school everyday. Watching the kids grow daily, especially the first graders who are starting from scratch, is the best thing in the world. They don’t know how to read or write and by the end of the year you see them reading and writing. I also love the thought of my kids waiting for me every day with a hug and waiting to learn. One day I will see them and say “wow, I taught these kids and now maybe some of them are doctors or lawyers”. For that reason, being able to watch them grow up is another thing that motivates me. For me, education means passion, devotion, dedication and love. If you don’t have that, you cannot be a teacher, it’s as simple as that.
When I was little, my first goal in life was to work in a nonprofit. The second goal was to build something like a children’s home or a food bank, for the children. I wanted to do something that would help the kids who needed it the most. These were my life projects. The second goal, hasn’t happened yet, but I am still dreaming about it. One day I will achieve it because I know I can. Working here at a nonprofit was my first dream and because I accomplished that, I know I can accomplish all my dreams. And that’s my story.”

“Mis primeros maestros fueron mis padres. Cuando tenía 5 años, me enseñaron a sumar, a restar, a leer y escribir. Lo mejor en mi vida son mis padres. Ellos han sido todo para mi. Desde chiquita me enseñaron todo lo que son valores, el respeto, el amor. Entró a la escuela y era chistoso porque yo ya sabía todo. Y los maestros en lugar de ponerme actividades extra, porque sabía para ellos mucho, me mandaban para casa con una nota firmada por dirección, diciendo que yo llegaba a casa tan temprano porque terminaba muy ligero las tareas. Luego en cuarto grado me dieron beca y así estuve. Amaba las clases, mis maestros favoritos eran los de español y matemáticas. Luego entré a la universidad.
Yo no iba a ser maestra, yo quería hacer informática, y eso empezé a hacer. Un día me mandaron a trabajo social, que tenía que darle clase a dos personas. Yo no quería, pero tenía que hacerlo, era parte de mi carrera. Les di clases y una de ellas, anduvo diciendo que yo era la peor maestra que existía y que no había aprendido nada conmigo. Entonces yo me puse a pensar, “¿y qué va a aprender conmigo si yo no sé nada de docencia?”. Entonces creo que soy maestra por esa persona. Porque fue un factor para decir: “Okay, ella cree que no puedo pero yo en realidad sí puedo”. Entonces cancele lo que es informática y entré en lo que es educación. Me gradué, soy licenciada en pedagogía, soy maestra y actualmente trabajo acá. Una amiga me habló mucho de la organización y me dió curiosidad, porque uno de mis sueños desde chiquita ha sido trabajar en una organización. Dejé mi currículum aquí en la escuela, y a los dos meses me contrataron.
Lo que más me gusta de enseñar es cariño de los niños. Es lo más bonito y lo que motiva a uno a venir todos los días a la escuela. El verlos crecer día a día. Principalmente con los de primer grado. Ellos inician de 0. No saben leer, no saben escribir… y al final del año ver cómo leen, ver como escriben… es lo mejor del mundo. También el pensar que mis estudiantes me están esperando todos los días con un abrazo, que van a aprender, y un día los veré y diré “guau, yo fui maestra de ese niño, que ahora es tal vez un médico o un abogado”. Por eso verles crecer es también mi motivación. Para mi la educación significa pasión, entrega, dedicación y amor. Si no tienes eso, no puedes ser maestra, así de sencillo.
Cuando era pequeña, mi primera meta en la vida era ésta, trabajar en una organización. La segunda, era como construir algo, un hogar o un comedor, para los niños. Tratar de ayudar a los niños que más lo necesitan. Esos eran mis proyectos de vida, y el segundo creo que sigue en pie. Algún día lo voy a lograr, yo se que puedo. Ese era mi otro sueño, y si logré este podré lograr todo los que yo quiera. Y esta es mi historia.”
