Meet Antonio Reyes, Mason on the Schools Construction Team
“I use to live in Agua Blanca North. It is close to Brisas de la Libertad. I lived with my in-laws and my wife there since I was 18. My in-laws supported me a lot. My mother-in-law was like a second mother. My wife worked at the factory in El Porvenir. My family moved at the same time and settled at La Siete. Everyone took a piece of the land and made their house. I helped make a wooden house for my mother with my brothers, but they did not have papers for the land.
Then, Shin appeared like magic and told us he would like to help us. After a while, he said he had gotten the money to purchase land and build the houses. We found that this land (now, Villa Soleada) was for sale, and we all went to see it– Wincho, Chilo, my dad, my uncle Daniel, my mom’s brother. Nearly, the whole family and other people from Siete went to see it also. Shin said, “If everyone likes it here, we are able to purchase it.” So he did. I remember very well that he bought 100 shovels and 100 pickaxes. And he said that 400 Americans will come for the first time to help make the houses in Villa. Then, we began constructing the houses for two years, but I was on the waiting list for a house. I was not one of those who were chosen at the beginning. After a year and a half, he confirmed that they had a house for me. I remember crying with joy that day. My wife still worked in the factory and bought the food for the family and I worked at the project. I biked everyday for two years and dropped off my daughter, Osiris, in school. After I came to Villa to work, then I went to pick her up and we returned to Agua Blanca. Now with much effort, we have successfully managed to get Osiris to go to university.
I have learned many things from the volunteers. Because they teach one to be respectful. To give respect to the littlest ones to the elders. To throw trash away in its place. We are used to taking trash and just throwing it anywhere. I feel the love and appreciation in the hugs that they give us. One can feel it. Truly.
I say it to my daughters. They are studying right now so they can get jobs. Katherine is in the Villa Soleada Bilingual School. I tell her to behave well, learn, and try to learn as much as she can.
I want to keep improving. Improve my house. Fence it. To make it better for my daughters. I want them to have the best. If they have a partner, then to be the best possible couple. If not, my house will always be there for them whenever with respect. Life gives you everything. There is everything in life. There are things that happen, and things that don’t. Some things happen in one way, and others in another way. You have to have a clear mind. If something happens, try to ask God to help you survive. Because you have a family and you have to live for them.”

“Yo vivia en Agua blanca norte, está cerca de Brisas de la libertad. Yo vivía con mis suegros y mi esposa desde que tenía 18 años mis suegros me ayudaron mucho. Mi suegra fue como una segunda mamá. Mi esposa trabajaba en la fábrica en el Porvenir. Mi familia se mudó a la Siete y lo invadieron, cada uno agarró un pedacito de tierra e hicieron su casa, yo ayude a hacerle una casa de madera a mi mamá con mis hermanos pero allí no tenían papeles de las tierras.
Despues aparecio Shin como por arte de magia y nos dijo que nos quería ayudar. Después de un tiempo dijo que había conseguido el dinero para comprar una tierra y construir las casas de material. Nos dijeron que este terreno aqui en Villa estaba en venta y vinimos todos – Wincho, Chilo, mi papá, mi tío Daniel, el hermano de mi mamá, casi toda de la familia y otras personas de Siete también a verlo. Shin dijo, “si le gusta a ustedes allí, allí vamos a comprar”. Y asi fue. Me acuerdo muy bien que compró 100 palas y 100 piochas. Y dijo que venían 400 gringos por primera vez para ayudar a hacer las casas en Villa. Entonces empezamos a trabajar en construir las casas durante dos años pero yo estaba en lista de espera para conseguir mi casa, no fui uno de los elegidos al principio. Al año y medio me confirmaron que sí tendría casa y ese dia recuerdo que lloré de alegría. Mi esposa trabajaba en la fábrica todavía y compraba la comida y yo trabajaba en el proyecto. Dos años pase todos los días dejaba en la bici a mi hija Osiris en la escuela, venía a Villa a trabajar y la recogía en la tarde al salir y volvíamos a Agua Blanca. Ahora con mucho esfuerzo hemos conseguido que Osiris vaya a la universidad.
He aprendido muchas cosas con los voluntarios. Porque ellos le enseñan a uno a ser respetuoso. No hablar malas palabras. Respetar desde el más chiquito hasta el más grande, poner la basura en su lugar. Nosotros estamos acostumbrados a que lo que agarramos, lo tiramos. En el cariño y aprecio que siento en esos abrazos que le dan a uno. Uno siente. De verdad.
Yo lo digo a mis hijas. Ellas ahorita están estudiando de repente pueden tener un puesto de trabajo. Katherine está en la bilingüe y yo le digo, que se comporte bien, que aprende, que trata de aprender lo más que puede.
Yo quiero seguir mejorando, mejorar mi casa, cercarla, hacerla mejor y eso será para mis hijas. Quiero que ellas tengan lo mejor, si tiene una pareja pues la mejor pareja posible y sino, mi casa siempre será de ellas siempre que haya respeto. La vida da todo. Hay de todo en la vida. Hay que tener mente fresca. Si pasó algo, tratar de pedirle a dios que lo ayude para que poder sobrevivir. Porque uno tiene una familia y tiene que vivir por ella.”
