Meet Juan Carlos Salmeron, Villa Soleada Hostel Manager and Community Organizer
“When I was 14 to 15 years old, I began to work in a produce store. Then I worked for 3 years in a factory in Progreso and in San Pedro Sula. My wife told me that we had to return to Siete de Abril with her grandmother. Never did I think that we would have the opportunity to work with the organization but thanks to Pastora Monte for making it happen. She is my mother-in-law. Shin gave me an opportunity to take care of the teachers. They stayed in my house where I made them breakfast and lunch, and my wife made them dinner. They stayed for a year. Also, I began to work with the youth of Villa. I like soccer more than anything. Shin and I have always had that bond and that’s where our friendship began. After the teachers left, I worked for a year as a mason. From there Shin told me, ‘Juan Carlos, there is an opportunity for you to work with the volunteers. It is a very delicate area.’ He and I knew I was respectful to the teachers. We had a relationship like a father and his children so he offered me this opportunity. Shin and Yapa taught me the different areas of the hostel and how to treat volunteers. I don’t know English but through blood is how we are able to communicate. This is what my job is about, respecting the volunteers.
I have three children and now another one is on his journey, the last, the futbolito of Villa Soleada. I give thanks for the opportunity to have my daughters in the Villa Soleada Bilingual School. My daughter, Nicole, is very excellent at speaking English. I am happy to be able to work with the organization because of the growth. I tell people it’s not about the money. It should be about personal growth. I know many volunteers. When they come through the door and give me a hug, I feel happy.
I am building a church. My future is to help the youth grow. I like working with the youth. I cannot say that I am going to study and become a lawyer, or I have studied a lot. But what I want most is to be a supportive person for the rest of the people.”

“Con 14 o 15 años empecé a trabajar en una verdulera y de ahí cambié y trabajé 3 años en la Maquila en Progreso y luego también en la Maquila pero en San Pedro Sula. Mi mujer me dijo que teníamos que volver con nuestros hijos que estaban el Siete de Abril con su abuela. Nunca pensé que tendría la oportunidad de trabajar con esta organización allí pero gracias a Pastora Monte lo pude hacer, ella es mi suegra. Shin me dio una oportunidad cuidando a unos maestros, ellos se quedaban en mi casa, yo les hacía el desayuno y el almuerzo y mi esposa les hacía la cena. Así estuvimos un años. También empecé a trabajar con los jóvenes de Villa. Me gusta el futbol más que nada y Shin y yo siempre hemos tenido ese roce y de ahí empezó nuestra amistad. Al irse los maestros trabaje un año en la albañilería. De ahí Shin me dice, Juan Carlos hay una oportunidad para trabajar con los voluntarios, esta área es bien delicada y como me conocian y sabian que siempre había sido muy respetuoso con los profesores y profesoras, teníamos una relación como de padre a hijos y bueno me ofreció esta oportunidad. Shin y Yapa me enseñaron la diferentes áreas del hostel y como tratar a los voluntarios. No sé inglés pero la sangre nos hace podernos comunicar. Este es el área en la que yo trabajo y primeramente es el respeto a los voluntarios.
Tengo tres hijos y ahora viene otro en camino, el último, el futbolito de Villa Soleada. Doy gracias por la oportunidad de tener a mis hijas en la escuela Bilingüe, mi hija Nicole es bien excelente hablando inglés. Yo me siento contento de poder trabajar con esta organización por el motivo del crecimiento. Yo le digo a la gente, no es el dinero, lo que uno tiene que hacer es crecer mentalmente. Yo conozco a muchos voluntarios y cuando entran por esa puerta y me dan un abrazo yo me siento feliz.
Estoy construyendo una iglesia y mi futuro, es crecer y ayudar a los jóvenes, me gusta mucho trabajar con jóvenes. Ya no puedo decir que voy a estudiar para ser abogado o con muchos estudios pero lo que mas quiero es ser una persona de apoyo para el resto de las personas.”
